The farm consists of 90 acres of lush forest and pastures. There are eight outbuildings and a cottage where our daughter and grandson live. The original log house still stands (sort of) and the tobacco building and original "Carolina Shed Barn" are still in great shape and are used daily. The barn has mule stalls in the back, which have been converted to horse stalls. Our home is a large house built in the 1950's facing onto a two-acre pond with a beautiful green pasture behind it. In the near future an indoor riding arena will be built in this pasture.

The stocked pond includes: large-mouth bass, catfish, bream, and sterile carp. There are also many really, really big snappers in there. When the we first moved in, there were several beavers and beaver dens on the pond and we thought they were really cute until we started hearing trees falling in the night. Needless to say, the beavers had to be relocated. An otter came for a day, ate a carp, then left, but he was great fun to watch. When the wind is not blowing, the pond gets a perfect mirror-like surface and it reflects everything around it. A large blue heron has lived on the pond ever since we moved here. Every winter, the same Canadian geese come to the pond and share space with Burta's Roman geese and Toulouse geese.

Some of the more unique buildings include the original log house, which is falling down in places. We can't bring ourselves to tear it down. People call regularly and want to purchase the logs, which are in excellent shape. Plans have not yet been formulated for that house.

The tobacco-drying shed is still standing with the original drying racks in it. It isn't used for anything, but it is quite picturesque and reminds us of the local history of tobacco farming. There are also two chicken houses. Christie uses one for her pygmy goats and the other is actually used for chickens. Burta raises what she calls "funky chickens" to show at the State Fair each year and for their eggs. Her winnings from the State Fair finance the purchase of some exotic geese and peacocks.
